Columbus Crew Raise Deaf Awareness

Throughout my life I have learned many things. One of the biggest things I have learned is life will throw many things at us. We can go from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in a matter of seconds. No matter the high and no matter the low, everything in this life happens for a reason. These things happen to either teach us how to handle a situation or to open our eyes to a whole new world.

Recently, I was introduced to a lovely couple through a co-worker of mine. This couple is as normal as you and me and they live their life no different than anyone else. Unless someone told you, you would never be able to tell that one of them is hearing impaired. I know, I know, you’re asking yourself, “Where are you going with all this, Gary?” Well, they introduced me to an upcoming event that I would love to share with you.

The U.S. Men’s Deaf Soccer team was started in 1965 and the U.S. Women’s team was started in 1999. Both teams have participated in the Deaf Olympics for several years. The men first competed in 1965 and the women began in 2005. Like many others I was unaware these organizations existed. The Columbus Crew of the MLS is trying to change that.

The Columbus Crew is teaming up the USA Deaf Soccer teams to host a full day of events on Saturday, April 28th to raise awareness of deaf soccer. For a very small price of $25, you will have a chance to experience three matches in one day, not to mention many other exciting events to promote deaf awareness during the day.

At 1:00 p.m., the U.S. Women’s team will play followed by the U.S. Men’s Team at 3:00 p.m. There will be a break after the men’s match before the Columbus Crew take on the Vancouver Whitecaps. Events will take place outside the stadium leading up to the Crew’s match. All money raised during this day-long event will go to benefit USA Deaf Soccer.

After meeting my new friends, getting to know them and hearing about this event from them, I have learned yet another thing in life. Just because you have a disability does not mean you can’t live life to the fullest. No matter the disability, if you put your mind to it you will accomplish anything.

Please join me and The Good in Sports in thanking the Columbus Crew for their efforts in raising Deaf Awareness.
