MHSAA 1A Baseball Playoff Roundup: Pine Grove, Resurrection, Stringer all sweep – High School Sports News, Scores, Videos, Rankings

Now that the third round of the 1A baseball playoffs is in the books, we’ve got a clear picture of what to expect in next week’s North State and South State Finals.

In the north, Pine Grove and Tupelo Christian will switch off after the Eagles pulled out a fantastic 5-4 win over Biggersville on Saturday.

Resurrection Catholic and Stringer are on a collision course in the south after they swept Ethel and Richton respectively this weekend.

Here you take a closer look at how the entire 1A series played out last weekend:

North

Pine Grove def. Hamilton, 2-0

Game One – Pine Grove 13, Hamilton 3

Cason Jones went 5-for-5, drove in one race and scored two more to pace the Pine Grove attack in a 13-3 win in Game One on Thursday night at Hamilton.

Carson Rowland and Jacob Hopkins each ran three races. The Panthers knocked out 16 hits.

Jones went on 4.2 laps to win, giving up three earned races on three hits and five rounds with 10 strikes. Hopkins recorded the last six outs without giving up a hit.

Game Two – Pine Grove 4, Hamilton 3

Cason Jones went from first to third on a Cooper Rinehart double and came home to score on a wild course, and the Panthers went off with a 4-3 win in Game Two Friday at Pine Grove.

Pine Grove equalized the match to 3-3 in the third round when Carson Rowland scored on an RBI limit from Gunnar Kirkman.

Peyton Cornelius pulled the start for Pine Grove and gave up three runs (one earned) on four hits in 2.2 rounds of work. Rowland got the victory in relief after keeping Hamilton pointless over the last 4.1 innings with four strikes.

UPDATED MHSAA BASEBALL PLAYOFF BRAKET

Tupelo Christian def. Biggersville, 2-1

Game One – Tupelo Christian 8, Biggersville 6

Tupelo Christian took Game One in the series by erasing a 4-0 deficit and rallying to an 8-6 victory Thursday night in Belden.

The Eagles matched Biggersville’s four races in the first half and took the lead for good in the fourth half when Daniel Reddout drove in the race with a sacrificial fly and Khi Holiday came home to score on a throwing error.

Holiday also had a triple, and Kanyon Fleenor doubled and ran in three races.

Game Two – Biggersville 8, Tupelo Christian 7

Biggersville got some revenge in Game Two, winning 8-7 on rounding on a couple of Tupelo Christian errors in the eighth round.

Trey Mayes made a mistake and scored on a mistake on Cole Baggett’s ball to score the winning race.

Quinton Knight homer, drove in three races and scored two more for Biggersville. Jack Eaton got the victory in relief, and kept TCPS to an unearned race in the last 2.1 round.

Game Three – Tupelo Christian 5, Biggersville 4

Tupelo Christian scored two races at the bottom of the seventh to go off with a 5-4 series victory on Saturday at Tupelo.

Bryce Roye continued with a hustle and bustle to make things go, and John Paul Yates doubled into the gap in the left center to bring home the tie and winner races.

South

Resurrection Catholic def. Ethel, 2-0

Game One – Resurrection 6, Ethel 4

Resurrection took a 5-0 lead in the first half and went on to a 6-4 victory in the series opener on Friday night in Pascagoula.

Miller Kay had a two-run double to gain pace in the Resurrection offense, while Hayden Graves and Cyrus Rone both collected several hits for Ethel.

Cole Tingle won for Resurrection, went 6.2 laps and gave up two earned races in eight hits and a trip with 12 strikes.

Game Two – Resurrection 6, Ethel 5

The Eagles score took Game Two as well, and scored four races in the last two innings to get a 6-5 victory from behind.

An RBI walk from Tingle, an RBI single from Walker Frederic and an RBI fieldman’s choice from Max Askew tied the game in the sixth, and Nick Watts founded a fieldman’s choice to score Luke Schnoor for the victory race in the seventh.

Stringer def. Richton, 2-0

Game One – Stringer 9, Richton 1

Stringer skipped Richton in the series opener and scored four races in the first two rounds on his way to a 9-1 victory Friday night at Stringer.

Both teams had five hits, but Richton made four costly mistakes, and Kane Welborn and Colby Garrett each ran their own race for the Red Devils.

Nic Arender got the victory on the mound, went 6.2 laps and gave up an undeserved race of five hits and a trip with 10 strikes.

Game Two – Stringer 5, Richton 2

Stringer scored three races at the bottom of the seventh to ice a 5-2 victory in Game Two to end the series Saturday night at Richton.

Jackson Parker doubled and ran in two races to pace the Red Devil offense, and Lance Jenkins gave them another strong start, going the distance and giving up two races on seven hits.

Braden Meadows doubled for Richton, but there were no runners on board each time.
