Minute Maid Park is hosting the 2013 Astros Foundation College Classic for the 13th year, March 1-3. The event is one of the most competitive, early-season college baseball tournaments in the country and will feature six teams.
The event, formerly known as the Houston College Classic, will feature hometown schools Rice University and the University of Houston. This year’s field also includes Baylor, California-Berkeley, North Carolina and Texas A&M. According to the 2013 preseason poll compiled by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, four of the teams in the tournament are ranked nationally among the top 30 including North Carolina (#2), Rice (#18), Texas A&M (#24) and Baylor (#27). North Carolina enters this season as the No. 1 ranked team according to Baseball America.
North Carolina and Cal-Berkeley will be making their first appearance in the tournament while Rice and University of Houston continue their annual appearance.
This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Astros Foundation College Classic field has included at least three teams ranked nationally in the top 30 in pre-season polls.
