David Ortiz became just the 49th player in MLB history to join the 400 home run club on Wednesday. The blast came off of Oakland Athletics pitcher, A.J. Griffin, in the fourth inning in Oakland.
The Independence Day game in Oakland was attended by more than 28,000 fans, all of whom gave Ortiz a standing ovation. Ortiz was quick to tip his cap to the road crowd.
Ortiz was signed as an amateur free agent in 1992 by the Seattle Mariners. He made his MLB debut with the Minnesota Twins on September 2, 1997. Ortiz played in Minnesota through 2002 and hit 58 homers with the Twins. Since joining the Red Sox in 2003, Ortiz has hit 342 bombs. 352 of his career 400 home runs have come as a designated hitter.
