Jeter passes Ripken

Tonight, Derek Jeter’s leadoff double was hit number 3,185, moving him past Cal Ripken Jr. for 13th place on the all-time career list and notching another milestone for a future first-ballot Hall of Famer. Said Cal of theTwo heroes, role models. Photo: Ezra Shaw/Getty Images milestone, through a released statement:

“Congratulations to Derek on passing me on the all-time hits list.  Derek has been such a special player for such a long time and I am happy to see him continue to play at a high level.  He represents the game and the Yankees wonderfully and I hope that he continues to play and continues to give all of us baseball fans great memories.”

Seems quite fitting that Jeter would pass Cal, as both players have had similar tracks. Both played shortstop. Both have played their entire careers with the same team. But even more important, both guys have been class acts on and off the field.

Congrats to Derek on this milestone.
